Awe
“But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” Luke 2:19 NIV
Mary was a simple young girl who had been chosen by God to be the mother of His Son. She didn’t understand why God had chosen her or even how it could possibly be real. She was a participant in the single most important event in the history of the world. Did she understand the importance of what was taking place? Did she have any idea that her Son would be the Savior of the world? This verse tells us that she was just taking it all in. She trusted God completely and was submitted to His will in her life, so she was just sitting back watching the events unfolding before her. I have to believe she was in awe as the shepherds found them and worshipped Jesus and as the wise men brought Him gifts from afar. I can’t even imagine the conversations that she and Joseph must have had deciding how to go about raising God’s Son. She must have been watching Him throughout His childhood and pondering in her heart how different He was from her other children. There is no indication in scripture that she told others that He was God’s Son. We don’t even find that Mary explained herself to Joseph. An angel came to Joseph in a dream and told him that the child Mary was carrying was conceived through the Holy Spirit. There must have been talk around town when Mary began to show and it was obvious that she was pregnant, but we are not told that she tried to explain to everyone that the baby was God’s Son. She just quietly accepted God’s will for her life. It was enough that she knew what God was doing in her life. She didn’t have to tell everyone else. Sometimes I feel like that, too. Obviously, in a much different way, but when God speaks to me or does something amazing in my life, I just need time to treasure it in my heart and ponder it before I tell anyone else. I am so in awe that He would intervene in my life or that He would speak to me that I just want time to think about it and let it sink in for a while. And sometimes it takes a little while to grasp the reality of what He has done and to fathom the mystery of the King of the Universe using me to carry out His purposes here on Earth.
