“From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” Luke 12:48 NIV

Merriam Webster defines the word entrusted as “to commit to another with confidence.”³ This implies a trust and faith that the person who receives it will handle it with care and will do what they need to do with it. The Bible is clear that we are held accountable for the knowledge that we have. I had the privilege of being raised in a Christian home. I cannot remember a time when I was not involved in church. My parents and grandparents were strong Christians and gave me a firm foundation in my faith. I asked Jesus into my heart at the age of nine, so I have been walking with Him for forty-seven years. After numerous Bible studies, classes in seminary, countless sermons, and personal Bible reading, I have been given a lot of biblical instruction. This verse reminds me that I will be held accountable for that knowledge. The closer I get to Jesus, the more I realize just how little I know, but I am responsible for the knowledge I have been given. The definition of the word entrusted gives us insight into the extent of my responsibility. Knowledge is not given to us just for the sake of intellectual pursuit. It is not given so that we can impress others with how many Bible verses we know. We are entrusted with knowledge for care and protection. The knowledge is to be used to teach, equip, and prepare us to live the life God has prepared for us. We are expected to be obedient to the truths that have been entrusted to us. It is also given to us so that we can pass that knowledge on to others. We are expected to entrust what is given to us to others so that they can then pass it on to others as well.
