Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

“For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb.  I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful; I know that full well.  My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the Earth.  Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be.  How precious to me are Your thoughts, God!  How vast is the sum of them!  Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand---when I awake, I am still with You.”  Psalm 139:13-18 NIV

During Emily’s pregnancy, we talked often about how Hadley was developing.  She and Logan had an app that told them approximately how big she was each week and what body parts were forming and growing.  Human development is completely fascinating to me.  The minute detail of each step the human body goes through from the moment the egg and the sperm join to the moment that they can leave the mother’s body is nothing short of miraculous.  All the organs, bones, joints, blood vessels, and other cells that must come together exactly the right way to perform each bodily function cannot possibly be random.  If you take any part of the body and examine all the things that must work perfectly for it to fulfill its role, and then you realize that each part not only has to do its job, but it must work with all the other parts of the body to function properly, it is mind boggling.  We take it for granted that our thyroid is going to do its job and our liver will do what it is supposed to do.  We don’t have to tell our bodies to do all the things necessary to keep us alive.  To believe that that level of design happened by chance makes less sense than thinking that this computer I’m typing this devotion on was a pile of wires and circuits and it somehow pulled itself together to become a computer.  Our bodies are far more detailed and perform more difficult functions than any computer and yet many people do not believe that they had a Creator who designed them.  These verses tell us that God knits each one of us together personally in our mother’s wombs and that He has all our days planned before we are born.  He has a unique and specific plan for each of our lives.  There are no accidents.  Whether a child is planned by its earthly parents or not, each child is planned by God.  He is with us from the moment we are formed and stays with us through every moment of our lives.  We are each precious to Him.

Modern technology has made it possible to see the development of the baby in the womb.  When I was pregnant with both of my girls, ultrasound pictures were very limited.  The doctor told us what we were looking at and we took his word for it, but it was hard to see what they were describing.  The ultrasound pictures we got of Hadley were amazing.  You could see her lips and her fingers.  We didn’t have to be told what we were looking at because the picture looked almost like a photograph.  The idea that a baby is not a baby until it is viable outside the mother’s womb is ridiculous.  We can usually see the heartbeat by the time a woman knows she is expecting.  We can see facial expressions on the child that prove that they can feel pain within a few weeks of conception.  All the organs, limbs, and body parts are visible in the first trimester.  Abortion is a barbaric practice that should not even be acceptable on animals, much less innocent children.   Abortion is murder and God takes it very seriously.  As Christians, it is our responsibility to fight vigorously for the protection of the unborn.  And just as importantly, it is our responsibility to love pregnant women and support them in any way we can.  Abortion is not the best option for anyone.  The mother suffers from the pain, heartache, and guilt of her choices.  The idea that it is a quick, simple solution is not the reality.  The abortion industry is making millions of dollars each year through deception at the expense of innocent babies and scared, desperate mothers.  We cannot remain silent.
