Forgotten

“How long, O Yahweh? Will You forget me forever?  How long will You hide Your face from me?”  Psalm 13:1 LSB

“Only remember me when it goes well with you, and please show me lovingkindness by remembering me to Pharoah and getting me out of this house…..Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph but forgot him.”  Genesis 40:14,23 LSB

When David wrote Psalm 13 he was being chased by Saul who wanted to kill him.  He was depressed and felt all alone.  He had not done anything wrong.  He had served Saul faithfully and obeyed God and yet Saul hated him and wanted him dead.  David had been running for a long time, hiding in caves in the wilderness, hungry and afraid.  He felt like God had forgotten him.  This Psalm was his heartfelt cry to God begging Him to remember him and help.

Joseph’s life had not worked out like he thought it would.  He had been beaten by his brothers and thrown in a pit.  Then they retrieved him from the pit and sold him to Ishmaelite traders who in turn sold him in Egypt.  He ended up as a servant in Potiphar’s house, but then Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce him. When he refused her advances she lied and said he had tried to rape her and he was thrown in jail.  Some time later, Joseph was given the chance to interpret the dreams of two of Pharoah’s officials and thought perhaps that they would put in a good word for him so he could be released.  Instead, they forgot about him and he remained in jail.  Also in the reading today, we find John the Baptist in jail when Herodias convinced her daughter to ask Herod to execute John and bring his head to her on a platter.  He must have felt lovely, frightened and forgotten as he awaited execution.

Have you ever felt forgotten?  Invisible?  Unnoticed?  Have things not turned out the way you thought they would and left you feeling all alone and vulnerable?  I’m so thankful that the Bible is transparent.  It isn’t like social media where people only show the good things happening in their lives.  The Bible gives us the whole story.  We get to see the tragedy and the triumph.  We get a front row seat to the faithfulness of the Biblical heroes and we get to see the ugliness of their sins, the desperation of their fears and the pain of their suffering and heartache.  God allows us to see them in their humanness so we can realize they are just like us.  They had doubts and struggles.  They experienced intense emotions just like we do.  God had not forgotten them.  He was at work in each of their situations.  He was carrying out His plan for each of them.  He has not forgotten us either.  He is at work in our situation and will carry out His plan for us.  Seek Him and keep crying out to Him.  He is always there even when you can’t feel His presence.  Trust that He has not forgotten you.  Lean into Him.
