He Spoke
“For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm.” Psalm 33:9 NIV
Wow! God spoke and it came to be. Creatio ex nihilo is the Latin phrase for the attribute of God that tells us that He can create something out of nothing. Man is capable of amazing things. We can send a man to the moon. We can speak into a small metal object called a cell phone and someone on the other side of the planet can hear us and respond immediately. We can even take a baby out of its mother’s womb, perform surgery on it and return it to the womb to complete gestation. Man is very creative. We can make a beautiful picture using paint on a canvas. We can create masterpieces out of fabric, wood, plastic, yarn, steel, and clay. But no man can create something out of nothing. With all our technology and intellectual capability no one has ever figured out how to make something out of nothing. Only God can do that. And if that doesn’t completely amaze you, consider that God doesn’t even have to lift a finger to create something out of nothing. He only has to speak, and it is done. This is a very important theological principle. Nothing comes from nothing. There must be a divine architect who set everything in motion. All creation had a beginning and before that beginning, there was God. This verse makes me think of my favorite hymn, “How Great Thou Art.” There are many versions of it available on the internet and I would encourage you to find it and listen carefully to the words as you worship our Creator God.
