When the Sabbath was over, the women came back to the tomb to prepare Jesus’ body for burial. They had put Him in the tomb quickly on Friday before the Sabbath began. Their hearts were filled with sorrow. All their hopes and dreams were destroyed. But when they arrived at the tomb, they were thrilled and excited to find an angel, an empty tomb and their Lord alive and well. It was a miracle. Scripture tells us that an angel rolled the stone away from the entrance. Jesus did not need the stone to be rolled away to get out. The stone was rolled away so the people could see that the tomb was empty, Jesus was not there. He was alive! The angel told the women that Jesus had risen and urged them to run quickly and tell the disciples. Over the course of the day, He appeared to Mary Magdalene, Peter, the two men on the road to Emmaus and then 10 of the disciples in the Upper Room. They were astounded. He really did it. He conquered death. Jesus was the only person to ever raise Himself from the dead. Jesus had risen others from the dead, but no one has ever risen Himself from the dead. Jesus is Alive!
