In God We Trust

“In God, whose word I praise—In God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”

Psalm 56:4 NIV

“They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So, they prepared the Passover.” Luke 22:13 NIV

In the passage in Luke, Jesus gave the disciples specific instructions about where and how to prepare for the Passover and they followed them exactly. They found things just as Jesus had told them. He had worked out all the details. They didn’t need to worry about anything, all they had to do was obey His instructions. The disciples followed Jesus’ instructions because they trusted Him. Their faith was far from perfect. They had the privilege of walking with Jesus, seeing firsthand the miracles He performed and yet we find them on a boat afraid Jesus was going to let them drown during a storm, on a hillside worried about how to feed 5,000 people and thinking they were seeing a ghost when Jesus walked out on water to them. But they were learning little by little to trust Him. By this point, they trusted Him enough to do what He said.

The Psalmist David had learned this lesson as well. He knew He could trust God. His time in the wilderness running from Saul had taught him that God is faithful, and He can be trusted. David knew that God’s will and plans could not be thwarted. There was nothing that mortal men could do to Him unless God allowed it. He was not afraid because he trusted in God’s goodness. He knew God loved him and that “in all things God works for the good of those who love Him and have been called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28 (NIV) David also trusted in God’s greatness. He knew not only that God wanted what was best for him, but that He had the power and ability to bring it about. We have that same assurance. We can trust Him. We can obey Him and follow His instructions because we know He is faithful. We do not have to be afraid. He is working out all the details to accomplish His purposes in and through us.
