Magnified
“Let those be joyful and glad in You, all who seek You, and let them say continually, ‘Let God be magnified,’ those who love Your salvation.” Psalm 70:4 LSB
Two of the most important things we do as believers are to get to know God in a personal, intimate relationship and to tell other people about Him. Psalm 70:4 describes this process, “Let God be magnified.” David isn’t suggesting that we put God under a microscope and make Him bigger than He really is so we can see Him better. Rather we need to use a telescope to see God because He is so big we cannot even begin to see Him with our naked eye. We don’t have to make God bigger; He is far beyond our comprehension. To magnify Him is to expand our understanding of who He is and what He is capable of doing. The more we get to know Him, the more our faith will develop. As our faith develops we will have a greater desire to please and obey Him. A natural result of a deeper relationship with Him will be that we want to share His love and mercy with others. Instead of magnifying ourselves, we will seek to magnify Him through our actions and words. A song by Cody Carnes conveys this message well.:
Christ Be Magnified
Were creation suddenly articulate
With a thousand tongues to lift one cry
Then from North to South and East to West
We’d hear Christ be magnified
Were the whole earth echoing His eminence
His name would burst from sea to sky
From rivers to the mountain tops
We’d hear Christ be magnified
When every creature finds its inmost melody
And every human heart its native cry
Oh then in one enraptured hymn of praise
We’ll sing Christ be magnified
Oh! Christ be magnified
Let His praise arise
Christ be magnified in me
Oh! Christ be magnified
From the altar of my life
Christ be magnified in me
