“For He spoke and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm.” Psalm 33:9
Wow! God spoke and it came to be. Creatio ex nihilo is the Latin phrase for the attribute of God that tells us that He is able to create something out of nothing. Man is capable of amazing things. We can send a man to the moon. We can speak into a small metal object called a cell phone and someone on the other side of the planet can hear us and respond immediately. We can even take a baby out of its mother’s womb, perform surgery on it and return it to the womb to complete gestation. But no man can create something out of nothing. And if that doesn’t completely amaze you, consider that God doesn’t even have to lift a finger to create something out of nothing. He only has to speak and it is done. The words to my favorite hymn come to mind.
O Lord My God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.
And when I think of God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.
When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,
And then proclaim: My God how great Thou Art!
Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Savior God to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!
