Revelation/Vision

“Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.” Proverbs 29:18

The word “revelation” has been so associated with end-time events that whenever we see this word, we think it is referring to the apocalypse. Merriam Webster defines revelation as “an act of revealing or communicating divine truth, something that is revealed by God to humans.” The New Living Bible translates this verse, “When people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild.” Basically, this verse is telling us that people who do not accept God’s guidance do not have purpose and direction. Without the benefit of God’s guidance in their lives, they are destined to live a meaningless existence. This seems harsh, but it is true. Solomon, who was the wisest person who ever lived, concluded, “Meaningless! Meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” He had obtained knowledge, wealth, possessions, and power and he realized that nothing satisfied him. People who do not have God in their lives are constantly trying to find purpose and meaning. They chase after anything that they think will bring them pleasure. It works for a little while and then they go on to the next thing. They are seeking purpose and fulfillment and never find it. We were created in the image of God and because of that we can never be complete without Him. When we accept Jesus into our hearts, the Holy Spirit comes and fills up places in us that we didn’t even know were empty. Let’s imagine a glass tumbler is your life. You take a hand full of marbles to represent all the things you try to fill your life with like relationships, work, possessions, money, hobbies, interests, talents, dreams, etc. Fill up the glass with the marbles. It looks full, but if you look closely there are gaps throughout the glass around the marbles. Now take another glass filled with water and pour it in. The water is like the Holy Spirit. He fills up all the gaps. He goes in around our talents, work, hobbies, relationships, dreams, etc. and He fills us to the brim. He completes us. Without Him there will always be gaps.

I cannot imagine going through this life on my own. If I didn’t have God with me leading and guiding me, I don’t know where I would be. I would be motivated by selfish ambition and led by my emotions. My choices would revolve around seeking pleasure and comfort. I don’t know how I would deal with difficulty and disappointment if He wasn’t there to comfort and encourage me. If He was not there to help me overcome temptation, there would be no reason not to give in. When I experience pain and suffering, He gives me hope that tomorrow will be better and helps me find purpose and meaning in what I am experiencing. How can you keep going if you don’t have hope? We have the benefit of divine guidance. God reveals to us everything we need to live a life of meaning, purpose, and direction and we are blessed if we listen to Him.
