The Eyes Of The Lord
“For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.” 2 Chronicles 16:9 NIV
This is my favorite Bible verse. It has sustained me in many dark times. Knowing that the eyes of the Lord are scanning the earth looking for someone who needs to be strengthened suggests an active God. He isn’t just sitting up in heaven passively observing what is going on here on earth. He isn’t waiting till we pray and tell Him what we need so He can decide whether or not to act on our behalf. His eyes are constantly scanning the earth watching His children to see what we need. He wants to help us. He wants to be actively involved in the lives of those whose hearts are fully committed to Him. Some people believe in God. They know that there is Someone who created the universe and who is in heaven somewhat in charge of everything, but they believe that He just set it all in motion and He doesn’t get involved in the everyday lives of people on earth. They would probably say that if something big happened He might step in but He isn’t personally involved in the lives of everyday people. We are just responsible for doing the best we can while we are here and hopefully it will be good enough to get us into heaven. I can’t imagine anything more depressing. To know that there is a God but think He doesn’t care enough to be involved in our lives is not appealing to me. I would not want to worship and serve a God like that.
Thankfully, that image of God is not Biblical. There is nothing in the Bible that supports the idea of a passive, uninterested, uninvolved God. Our God loves us and cares about us.
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:29-20 NIV
“And my God will fulfill all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 LSB
“No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man, but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.” I Corinthians 10:13 LSB
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10 LSB
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him. The Lord is good to those whose hope is in Him, to the one who seeks Him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.” Lamentations 3:22-26 NIV
“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6 NIV
“You have searched me, Lord, and You know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; You perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; You are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue, You, Lord, know it completely.” Psalm 139 1-4 NIV
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or be in dread of them, for Yahweh your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6 LSB
“So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:17-19 LSB
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” I John 1:3 NIV
Does this sound like a detached impersonal God? He loves us more than we can imagine and wants to be involved in every part of our lives.
