The Lord Is My Helper
“Make sure that your way of life is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, ‘I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,’ so that we confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?’” Hebrews 13:5-6 LSB
The author of Hebrews was quoting Psalm 118:6 in this passage. “The Lord is my helper” is a declaration of complete reliance on God. It is faith in the power and provision of God to meet all our needs. A helper is someone who is active in our lives. This is not the image of a distant God sitting on a throne detached from His creation. God desires to be intimately involved in every aspect our daily lives. He meets our physical needs. We do not have to worry about how we will feed or clothe ourselves because He is our loving Father and will provide everything we need (Matthew 6:25-34). “And my God will fulfill all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 LSB He meets our emotional needs. He gives us peace and comfort when we are troubled (John 14:27, Philippians 4:7, 2 Corinthians 1:3-4). He gives us the gift of His presence when we are lonely or afraid (Joshua 1:5, 2 Chronicles 16:9a, Matthew 28:20). And He provides healing from past hurt (Psalm 34:18, 147:3, Isaiah 53:5). God also meets our spiritual needs. He gives us strength and perseverance (Isaiah 41:10, Psalm 46:1, 28:7, Ephesians 6:10-20). He gives us the ability to overcome temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13). And He develops the fruits of the Spirit in us so that we can walk with Him in faith (Galatians 5:22-23).
Because we have God as our helper, we do not have to be afraid. There is nothing man can do to us because we have His protection. He will never leave us or forsake us. He goes before us clearing the way. He walks beside us as our faithful companion giving us encouragement and strength to persevere and He walks behind us to protect us from danger. He is closer than our next breath. “The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.” Psalm 145:18 NIV “I lift my eyes to the mountains. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of Heaven and Earth. He will not let your foot slip—He who watches over you will not slumber.” Psalm 121:1-3 NIV We can rest in the knowledge that we are safe in His mighty hands.
