Too Troubled to Speak
“My voice rises to God, and I must cry aloud; My voice rises to God, and He will hear me. In the day of my distress I sought the Lord; In the night my hand was stretched out without weariness; My soul refused to be comforted. I remember God and I am disturbed; I muse and my spirit faints. You have held my eyelids open; I am so troubled that I cannot speak.” Psalm 77:1-4 LSB
Have you ever been so troubled that you couldn’t speak? Sometimes there are just no words. It may be caused by fear, worry, depression, shame, guilt, remorse, grief, or despair. There are moments in life when the only thing we can do is cry or maybe you have cried so much that you are numb and you can’t even cry anymore. The psalmist understood that in those moments the best thing we can do is turn to our heavenly Father. We don’t have to speak words to communicate with Him. He understands our deepest anguish and He meets us right where we are. Romans 8:26-27 assures us, “And in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” LSB When we can’t seem to form the words to say, the Holy Spirit expresses our needs to God on our behalf.
God does not intend for us to handle the trials and difficulties of life alone. He is there for us. No matter what we are facing, what we have done, or what has been done to us, He is waiting with open arms to help. “Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16 LSB “For the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous, and His ears attend to their prayer.” I Peter 3:12a LSB "Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” I Peter 5:7 LSB “In my distress I called upon Yahweh and cried to my God for help; He heard my voice out of His temple, and my cry for help before Him came into His ears.” Psalm 18:6 LSB “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in Him.’” Lamentations 3:22-24 ESV “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” James 4:8 LSB “So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being firmly rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:17-19 LSB God loves you more than you can possibly understand. He is there for you. Lean into Him.
