The Right Words

“Do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time, you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” Matthew 10:19-20 NIV

So often we do not share with people about Jesus because we think we don’t know what to say. We are afraid we will not say the right thing, leave something out, or say something that isn’t accurate. We are afraid we won’t have all the answers to their questions, so we just don’t say anything. If we are doing the talking and answering their questions out of our reasoning and understanding, then we will not be effective. The Holy Spirit gives us the words to speak, and the Holy Spirit prepares their heart to hear what we have to say. “This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with spirit-taught words.” I Corinthians 2:13 (NIV)

The more time we spend in God’s Word and in prayer, the more prepared we will be to share about Jesus with others. We are not better prepared because we have more knowledge and know more Bible verses to tell them, because we have memorized the plan of salvation, or because we have a speech ready to recite whenever someone asks us about Jesus. We are better prepared because we know Jesus better and we have our eyes focused on Him as we go through our day. We are more aware of opportunities to share and His Spirit overflows from within us. When someone asks me about my husband, I can tell them all about him. I can tell them the things he likes and doesn’t like, what makes him happy, and what makes him mad. I can tell them how much I love him and how much he loves me. I spend time with him and know him well, so I am excited to tell anyone about him. The more time we spend with Jesus, the easier it is to tell others about Him. Keep your focus on Jesus and when He gives you opportunities to tell others about Him, He will give you the words they need to hear.
