Sowing and Reaping

Sowing and Reaping

“Remember this:  The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly and the person who sows generously will also reap generously.  Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver.  And God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work.”  2 Corinthians 9:6-8 HCSB

This is a great follow-up to yesterday’s devotion.  In the Old Testament, there were very specific instructions laid out about how much you had to give.  A tenth of your harvest, flock, livestock, etc. was required.  There were specific offerings that were given at specific times and for different purposes.  It was part of the law.  Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection did away with the sacrificial system and therefore we are not bound by the ten percent rule.  These verses explain that we are now instructed to give according to what we have decided in our hearts.  I don’t think that means that we can just give one or two percent and be totally fine if that’s what we have decided we were going to do.  I think ten percent is pretty much the baseline and He may want us to give even more than that.  I think the key is that we ask Him what He wants us to give.  This may also be different in different seasons of your life.  When you are young and starting out it may be difficult to give ten percent.  If you seek God and ask Him to show you how much He wants you to give, He will reveal it to you.  There may be times when five percent is what you need to give and other times when He wants you to give much more.   He may reveal a specific amount to you, or He may tell you to give of your time and energy.  The key is that we need to allow Him to lead us.

There have been many times over the years when Brian and I both felt compelled to give to a ministry. We have decided to take a few days to pray and ask God to show us how much we should give, and He has revealed the same amount to both of us.   When He does reveal to you how much you should give, it is extremely important to stick to it faithfully.  There will be times when it is hard to give, but it is important to trust Him to provide for your needs even when you can’t see how He can.  He is faithful.  He will not let you down.  God is able to make His grace overflow to you in every way.  There is perhaps no area that reveals our faith and trust in Him better than our finances.  If we sow sparingly, we will reap sparingly.  But if we sow generously, we will reap generously.
